Antenatal and postnatal depression affects around 11,000 Kiwi mothers each year, although many mild to moderate cases will go undiagnosed.
Only about a quarter of mothers suffering from the condition will receive publicly funded support. That has serious implications since the condition affects not only mothers but has knock-on effects for children and the wider family.
That's where Mother's Helpers comes in. The charity is raising awareness about antenatal and postnatal depression, and supporting mothers who may be at risk of developing the condition or who are recovering from it.
