Background:
In July 2021 the NZ Marketing Association (MA) advertised for an Intern Board Member. This was another way to support our members in terms of their professional development and individual ambition. We received over 40 applicants for this role, well exceeding our expectations. Alex Williams was appointed as our Intern Board Member.
Throughout the candidate interview process, there were a couple of key themes coming through: “what do boards do?” and “how can I get a board position?”.
The MA has recently also run several workshops for CMOs, to understand how best to work with their boards.
Championing more marketers into Board leadership roles strongly aligns with our Marketers 2030 Strategy and the purpose “We enable marketers to be essential to creating value for NZ organisations”.

During the ‘orange’ light setting face masks are still recommended for all attending at this event and other health and safety measures will be followed as well.

Jo's career spans both public and private sector, with extensive experience across both finance and marketing functions for a number of large organisations including Mercury Energy, Tower, Tip Top and Auckland Council.
Her governance experience covers services, retail and not for profit sectors. Currently she is Chair of the MA and an independent Director and Audit and Risk Chair for Office Products Depot.
Jo is passionate about supporting the professional growth of MA members and championing the marketing discipline at the top table, as a key success driver for NZ organisations.
Principal Consultant - Governance, Kerridge & Partners
Jayne is the Principal Consultant in the Governance practice of the leadership company, Kerridge & Partners.
She has a previous 20-year career as an award-winning national news, business and finance journalist, and senior editor in the UK and New Zealand working across newspapers and digital. She was also a regular contributor to Sky News, BBC Radio and Television.
Working exclusively in governance, she holds an LLB(Hons) (First Class) with company and employment law specialisms and is also a qualified chartered company secretary. She is currently studying for a legal Masters degree in International Corporate Governance.
She is passionate about the role of good governance in business success and is an advocate of the democratisation of governance, diversity, ESG and the wider impact and application of core principles in different sectors and business models.
Jayne currently serves on the executive committee of the Women on Boards organisation and is a former Chair of the Auckland branch of Governance NZ.
Originally from Manchester (UK), she is excited by the potential for New Zealand to be a world leader in driving high governance standards at all levels.

Henry is an experienced advisory and governance board chair, non-executive director and former CEO who has led and advised a range of companies in financial services, health and safety, manufacturing, professional services, artificial intelligence, horticulture, construction, and technology sectors. He is a Chartered Member of IoD and a Fellow of Governance New Zealand. His experience provides valuable perspectives to organisations who are looking to achieve the next level of growth, expansion and transformational change based on the strategic intent of `thinking like a customer’; not about them’.

Managing Partner, Rainger & Rolfe and Independent Director at Auckland Unlimited
For her day job, Jen is Managing Partner of Rainger & Rolfe, a creative advertising agency working with some of New Zealand’s most successful brands.
But recognising the importance of having a marketing voice at Board level, Jen has also spent the last 18 years developing an impressive governance career.
Jen currently sits on two boards: Auckland Unlimited with nearly $2b worth of assets under management (where she also serves as Chair of the Director Appointments Committee) and Citycare Limited – one of New Zealand’s largest infrastructure businesses delivering sophisticated services and innovation in the Water and Property Maintenance industry. Previously Jen served multiple terms with Dunedin Venues Limited, Daffodil Enterprises (Cancer Society), Regional Facilities Auckland and New Zealand Rugby League.

Peter is a mentor and company director with over 20 years of governance experience. Until he ceased to practice at the end of 2020, he was a business lawyer for 35years (a marketing lawyer and the head of the Sports, Entertainment and Marketing practice of Simpson Grierson). He was a partner in the Commercial Department of Simpson Grierson from 1991 until he retired from the partnership at the end of 2017.
Since 1999 Peter has held Board/Observer roles in the public and private sectors, including facilities ownership and management, destination marketing, destinationmanagement, business development, investment attraction, economic development-supporting infrastructure, regional shared services, sector transformation, primary produce processing and marketing, events and consumer products and services, financial services including wealth management and insurance.
He is also a shareholder in the New Zealand technology company, Hammerforce.
Peter is a Chartered Member of the Institute of Directors, holds a Certificate in Company Direction from the Institute of Directors and a Certificate in the Fundamentalsof Management from Columbia Business School.
