Writing a bio can be scary.
People are going to read this. They’re going to judge me. Maybe that’s why most bios are written in the 3rd person. It keeps this fear at arm’s length.
…Mike is a Creative Director at DDB and over the last x amount of years he’s done the following impressive things…
Who is this admiring journalist that’s followed my career with such dedication?
Yet it’s hard not to do the safe approach.
Many ads fall into the same trap. They say they want to stand out when in truth they’re desperately trying to fit in – to not be noticed and judged.
But over the years you realise that avoiding fear is the surest route to forgettable work, to forgettable bios and forgettable talks at industry conferences.
So Haydn and I will be embracing the fear of presenting to ‘500+ industry professionals’ so that we can discuss this vital ingredient in making anything of value.
