Government looking at costly changes to the Privacy Act

The Government is looking to broaden the scope of the Privacy Act to require individuals to be notified when an organisation collects their personal information from a third party. Justice department is looking for feedback on this proposal by 30 September 2022.

This would appear to affect marketers when they collect data from a public source, or when they receive data from another source (e.g., a partner company or list broker). In effect it would require you to notify every individual that you had collected their information. Time consuming and costly!

You can get the information here.

The Marketing Association will be making a submission, please get in touch with Keith Norris if you have any comments or questions.
