I had the pleasure of attending the Marketing Association’s exclusive student event on Thursday night as an executive of the AUT Marketing Collective club. The event was a panel session with industry-leading marketers, including Frankie Coulter from Goodman Fielder, Fiona Cresswell from Fisher and Paykel Healthcare, Brian White from Salt, and Tania Bui from Craig’s Investment Partners. The event began with an opportunity to network with the speakers and other attendees, which helped to break the ice before the panel started. It was also a great chance to connect with like-minded students and industry professionals and to showcase your marketing skills!

The panel session covered important topics for students nearing graduation and those who are embarking on their marketing journeys. A key tip from the panel was to showcase your individuality and distinctiveness through your cover letters and during interviews to stand out and form a proper connection with the interviewer. I learnt not to be afraid to add extra activities I do outside of my studies in my CV even if they are not relevant to the position I’m applying for, as this shows the interviewer your personality and could even be a way to find a hobby you have in common with them!

One key takeaway from the panel was to take your time finding the right role that aligns with your values and your job interests. It is important to find an organisation that matches your degree, vision, and passion. The panel reiterated that the first job you see may not necessarily be the right one, which is important to remember when it starts to feel tempting to accept the first job offer you receive. Frankie’s statement that “the universe will provide” stood out to me as it reminded me that good things take time and landing your perfect role may not happen instantly or in the way you had planned.

Overall, I found this event very inspiring as an upcoming graduate. It reassured me that
opportunities are out there and that showcasing your love for marketing and the organisation you are applying for goes a long way.
