This three-part series is designed for today’s Marketing leaders who are ready to shift from being defined by others to defining their own leadership identity and impact. Across September, October, and November, we’ll explore how you can:
Stop Defending. Start Defining.
In today’s C-suite, Marketing leaders still face a credibility challenge. Too often, Marketing is stereotyped as “the colouring-in department” — a perception that undermines the strategic weight of our role.
I know this isn’t just history. Many of you have told me the stereotyping still remains. Yes, in some organisations it has improved, but across the profession it continues to be a barrier to career progression. It’s systemic, and until we address it, the profession risks being boxed in.
So how do you take back control — not just for the profession, but for yourself?
The truth is, technical skills and smart strategies alone aren’t enough. Identity is the key. When identity leads, credibility follows.
I’ve seen it in my own 26-year career, defending teams under fire, leading restructures, and transforming Marketing functions from misunderstood to mission-critical. And I see it in the leaders I coach now. When they stop performing someone else’s version of success and start leading from their True North, they move from being heard to being sought out.
Two lessons stand out:
That’s why I created the TRUE NORTH IDENTITY SYSTEM. Did you know True North sits 28 degrees off the magnetic compass? It’s a powerful reminder not to live by someone else’s expectations, but to navigate by your own.
This month, you’ll learn to define who you are and map your influence at the top table with two tools:
Together, these tools help you stop defending and start defining your leadership identity.
